"You foolish girl, why would you let me think such a thing," the voice spits. I’m frozen with my eyes glued to the hands tangled in my lap, feet pressing into the cool porcelain seat, mouth shut into a tight line. "Why?!"

"Please… don’t yell," I whisper. A silent prayer races through my body as I realize that I don’t have a better excuse to provide other than my being a fool. I know what will soon be coming - my fate - and yet my taste for sweet romance draws me in like a moth to a flame. Memories taunt my vulnerable mind, leaving bite marks on my aching heart. The scene plays like a movie in my imagination: a younger version of me holds a phone to her ear with shaking hands and relays with quick words and harsh tones the proof she had gathered. Her pulse races with panic as she waits for the heartache to set in. Her frown quivers as his words come through the receiver.

"Why are you always accusing me of this stuff? You’re acting crazy."

She knew she wasn’t crazy but later that night, and for many nights after, she felt crazy. Inside, she knew she was right - that she wasn’t the only one - but the foolish heart she carried with her told her to believe the one she so loved.

"You’ve always been such a naive girl," the voice accuses, snapping me back to the present. The words sting my ego and I press my eyes shut.

"He loves me," I return. "I’m sure of it this time. He’s different. The situation is different."

"You are blinding yourself,” it yells. My fist jabs angrily at the cool wall to my side .

You are being cold and closed minded,” I mock, annoyed. “You are doing no one any favors by being bitter and angry!” A silent moment makes my pulse race with tension.

"One of us has to protect your fragile heart," it says quietly. Despite the calm tone and reason behind them, the words are enough to make my volcanic heart erupt. Lava pours through my veins and burns my insides. In one swift movement I rise from the wooden lid I had found so comfortable and turn towards the mirror behind me to look it in the eye and scream in protest, but something stops me. Instead of the defensive girl with love kissing the corners of her mouth, the younger girl with sadness under her eyes stares back at me. Her lifeless brown eyes follow mine as I take in every inch of her disheveled person.

"I had to remind you," she whispers. "I had to remind you of what you were - what we were." I say nothing, so she continues: "He was supposed to protect you, but instead he made everything worse and you were too blind to even ask him to stop."

"He’s different-"

"A different boy, sure. But what’s the likelihood that this will end well?" I scowl at the authoritative tone in her voice.

"You never know. Things could work out with him." A dark smile plays at her lips that almost seems sympathetic.

"And if they don’t?" The image in the mirror swirls and leaves behind a new girl in its wake. Her eyes are closed, naked of any makeup. Her hair is curled like that of a doll and is pressed against her blushing cheeks as though she is laying. I can make out a black lace neckline that’s the perfect introduction to a velvet black top. I gasp, recognizing myself in the lifeless girl, and clasp a cold hand to my gaped mouth. The mirror swirls again as I stand frozen once more. Rigorously blinking salty tears from my eyes, I futilely attempt to refocus my vision.

"You never know," the younger girl whispers sadly. My hands wipe at my tired eyes as they eventually focus back on the mirror. I stare listlessly at myself for a few moments, absorbing all of the fear and frustration that hardened with the magma in my heart and veins. Breaking eye contact with my reflection, I squint and ball my hands into fists.

"You never know."

I don’t even care about trying to feel better anymore. I’ve just accepted that I’m stuck this way.

This is what my one dream was like. The fire didn’t burn my palms, but it instead felt like an extension of myself.
